The Top 10 PlayStation 2 Video Games
The PlayStation 2 is the biggest selling console of all time and while that is impressive. Even more impressive is its catalog of games. Today I am picking out the best 10 games for the PlayStation 2! To make things fair, only one entry per franchise is allowed.
Time Splitters 2 (2002)
For some reason, not many people think of great first person shooters and the PS2 in the same thought. However, there were some great first person shooter games on the PS2 like Time Splitters 2. This is the best multiplayer shooter on the console. Nothing better than playing with some buddies sitting right next to you. What sets this game apart from the rest though is that it also has a fantastic single-player mode.
Tekken 5 (2005)
Picking the best fighting game for the PlayStation 2 was really tough, but Tekken 5 finished the series off on the console in perfect style. It was a drastic improvement over Tekken 4 and it also featured the old arcade Tekken games as a bonus. Tekken 5 is the kind of game that can be picked up and played easily but also mastered to the point where you feel like Sonic Fox.
Ratchet and Clank Up Your Arsenal (2004)
Ratchet and Clank were born on the PlayStation 2 and this is the best game on the console featuring these two crazy guys. The weapons are better, the levels are larger, there is more stuff to do and in general, this is as good as it gets for Ratchet and Clank on the PlayStation 2.
Viewtiful Joe (2004)
The Nintendo GameCube version of Viewtiful Joe may have looked better, but overall the PlayStation 2 got the better version. It has tighter controls, is not as painfully difficult and best of all it has a special mode that lets you play as Dante from Devil May Cry. This is a truly incredible game that features some great action, but it also makes you think as well.
Jak 3 (2004)
You could argue that Jak 3 did not improve a ton from Jak 2. However, I would argue that the game felt much larger is scale in every way imaginable. The large open world, the engrossing story, the fantastic mix of exploration, combat, driving and puzzle solving make this one of the best 3rd person action games on the console.
Shadow of The Colossus (2005)
Even though there is not a lot of dialogue or even story in Shadow of The Colossus, this game is beautiful. You need to track down and kill these incredibly large beasts. Scaling each one is its very own level! One of the most amazing games on the PlayStation 2 and you really believe what you are doing is right, but at the same time, you feel sorry for the Colossuses that you need to take down.
Final Fantasy X (2001)
There are some fantastic RPG’s on the PlayStation 2, but the hype for the first Final Fantasy game, Final Fantasy X was unreal. For the first time we had voice acting and the presentation was an incredible step up from what the PlayStation 1 Final Fantasy games offered. This was really the last of the classic style Final Fantasy games.
Kingdom Hearts II (2005)
The first Kingdom Hearts was a lot of fun, but Square really nailed it with the second one. Mixing Final Fantasy and Disney characters sounds so cheesy, but it works. The story is really complex, but traveling to all the different Disney worlds, leveling up, learning new skills and meeting new friends along the way makes for one heck of an adventure.
God of War II (2007)
God of War II took everything that was great about the first game and made it even better. More gruesome ways to kill enemies, incredible graphics and one of the best-written stories of the entire series. It is more than fair to say that God of War II pushed the PlayStation 2 to its limits and for many is still regarded as the pinnacle of the series.
Grand Theft Auto San Andreas (2004)
How Rockstar managed to get Grand Theft Auto San Andreas onto the PlayStation 2 is beyond me, but this game is the pinnacle of what they were doing in the console. Set in the 90’s the game is a blast to play. CJ is an awesome character to play as, but it is the immensely huge open world that is the real star. Even to this day, some people say that Grand Theft Auto San Andreas is the best game in the series.
Picking just ten games from a library as epic as the PlayStation 2 has is really tough. Let us know what your top ten PlayStation 2 games are.
